Welcome Message from Dr Dianne Grocott
What is AAADHDIG ?
Australian Adult ADHD Interest Group
AAADHDIG is a network of professionals who share expertise and develop resources to help us in our work with
Adults with ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder)
What is ADHD?
ADHD is a genetic condition resulting in intermittently poor control of attention, thoughts, movements, impulses and emotions.
Diagnostic criteria are inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity but there are many comorbidities. Depending on the interplay of strengths, stresses and scaffolding, a person with ADHD may thrive or crash in different circumstances and at different times of their life.
We believe that the 2-5% of Australian adults who have ADHD have the right to know about their condition and be supported to manage this so that they can thrive. Professionals have an obligation to be proficient in identifying and managing ADHD.
How we Operate?
We have a multidisciplinary membership, currently psychiatrists, GP’s, addiction physicians, pediatricians, psychologists and ADHD Coaches.
Through AAADHDIG Website’s virtual meeting spaces and online learning platform we aim to facilitate professionals who are new to Adult ADHD to be able to upskill easily and to connect with more experienced colleagues.
From 2015-2019 we held bimonthly dinner meetings with guest speakers, prompted by the fact that there is no training program in Adult ADHD in Australia..
Why us?
Our collegiate atmosphere has fostered greater confidence in our management of Adults with ADHD and wider interdisciplinary referral networks. Our connections have generated special AAADHDIG projects including:
- RANZCP (Royal Australian & New Zealand College of Psychiatrists) Peer Review Group on Adult ADHD
- Inception of the new RANZCP ADHD Network
- Development of Australia’s first GP training program in Adult ADHD, with proposed accredited prescribing and ongoing remote mentoring
- Involvement in the RANZCP Working Party on ADHD Guidelines for Psychiatrists
- Involvement in the AADPA (Australian ADHD Professional Association) Australian ADHD Guidelines Group
- Involvement in an international research project on ADHD and Substance Use
- Collaboration of ADHD Coaches in sharing expertise and designing coaching programs
AAADHDIG website development. We are aiming to construct a virtual textbook on Adult ADHD of brief videos of concepts, case vignettes and clinical pearls which will be relevant to our daily work.
Members are affiliated with our various professional associations and AADPA (Australian ADHD Professional Association).
We have good links with international ADHD organisations and we work collaboratively with ADHD Consumer Organisations.
